how do I Use a utility (such as Roadkil's Sector Editor) to overwrite LBA-3 with all zeroes on the original disk before attempting the cloning operation. I am trying to clone a dell laptop hdd that has an HPA

Hi there.. if your trying to clone the hard disk, are you just copying the data from one hard disk directly to another to make an identical copy?? if you are doing this, perhaps RawCopy is more what your after?

The HPA can be a tricky one because the drive size reported by the bios may be less than the real disk size so this area isnt copied.. This also means it cant be access by most tools directly..

I think if you look on the net you might find some tools that will do exactly what you are after which are specifically written for HPA drives.

Try the the link below, it might have what you need!

I'm trying to do the same as xd40. A Dell machine with Media Direct doesn't clone correctly and zeroing out LBA-3 seem to be the easiest way to fix the problem as once you do it cloning works as per the link you provided to goodells says. My problem is that I'm not sure that I'm accessing the correct sector to zero out. Is it as simple as starting the program and in my case selecting C: and then going to Current 0000000003(LBA-3?) of 0224235269 and then changing everything to zeros? Will I have to clear out the right hand column also or will all that disappear once everything in the left hand section is a zero?

Thanks

I have the same issue as xd40 and raymee. Could you verify that what raymee is trying to do above would zero out the LBA-3?

Thanks!

Here is a link I was given to get around the fact my computer uses Media Direct and it directed me to your website:

Great question. I'm hesitating, too, because my LBA-3 doesn't look anything like the example

given on this forum:
.

WARNING to RAYMEE: NOT "C:", it's Physical Disk 0.

(I assume your original drive is disk 0 and your new drive is disk 1.) C: is one of the logical disks on the original physical disk. The MBR exists at a higher level than do the logical drives (C: and D:).

Zeroing LBA-3 in the MBR of the physical disk 0 lobotomizes Dell MediaDirect and paralyzes the program that creates the HPA when booting from the drive. In turn, this keeps your new drive from getting amnesia when you boot from it.

I am using XP, and I don't see a way to select Physical Disk 0. I only see drive letters in the list. What could be the problem?

If you cant see the drives its possible you dont have administrator access, or alternatively some other process is using the drive and wont allow you to access it.
