This is likely stupid, but is Windows XP a variety or extension of Windows NT (2000 ?) ?

I ask because sometimes diagnostics identify this 'XP' machine as NT, or Windows 2000.

The unit in question is a HP Pavilion a1030e running a Sempron processor.

Perhaps the answer to this would be useful to newer Win programmers; i.e. me. :)

Most of the newer OS's were built on the "NT Platform" and windows identifies them as NT with various version numbers.

Windows 95/98 etc were totally different and identify themselves as just plain windows with other version numbers.

Now it makes sense.

Besides some version of NT, it also shows up as 'Windows 2002, Service Pack 3'.

What is Windows ME (Millenium?)? I've got an old Dell with that installed. I used the machine for years and it was definately more advanced than '98, with things like primitive USB support.
